How Often Do I Need Dental X-Rays?

How Often Do I Need Dental X-Rays?

Good oral health is part of good overall health, and regular exams and cleanings are as important as regular physicals. Additionally, certain issues with your teeth and gums can lead to cardiovascular problems.

At DentAlign NYC in Midtown East Manhattan, Kenn Kakosian, DDS, PhD, and his staff help you maintain a beautiful smile, but their main goal is to help you enjoy outstanding oral health. For most patients, that means having dental X-rays.

Benefits of digital X-rays

Dr. Kakosian uses a type of diagnostic imaging called a digital X-ray. It still uses radiation, like conventional X-rays, but a far smaller amount — 80-90% less. For comparison, the radiation from these X-rays is like what you might pick up from TVs, smartphones and computers.

The images show the roots of your teeth, the bone that holds your teeth in place, and your jaw. Dr. Kakosian can see problems like impacted wisdom teeth, cavities, or bone loss. Getting digital X-rays is quick and painless.

At worst, you may find holding the devices in your mouth slightly uncomfortable. Before taking your dental X-rays, your technician places a lead apron over your chest to ward off excess radiation.

Frequency of dental X-rays

Most people need to have dental X-rays every year or so, but it really depends on your particular situation. If you have more risk factors for certain conditions, it may be advisable to have X-rays more often so you can have preventive care if necessary.

Dr. Kakosian may request more frequent X-rays if you have a history of a particular medical issue, like chronic decay or gum disease. If you’re more prone to cavities, you may need X-rays every six months instead of annually.

Catching otherwise undetectable signs of decay with an X-ray may protect you from complications, like severe pain, or even tooth loss.

If you have symptoms of a cyst, an infection, an impacted tooth, or jaw disease, you may need to have X-rays more than once per year. Dr. Kakosian sometimes uses digital X-rays to determine whether someone is a candidate for certain procedures, such as a dental implant

Personalized care

How often you need dental X-rays depends on factors related to your medical history, your overall health, the state of your oral health, and any symptoms you may be experiencing. We also take into account when your last X-rays were taken.

When you come to DentAlign NYC, you can expect all of your dental care to be tailored to your unique needs, including the frequency of your dental X-rays. If you have questions, or you’d like to schedule an appointment, call or book online. We’re always happy to help.
