Invisalign® Vs. Traditional Braces: Weighing Your Options

Why You Should Consider Invisalign® Treatment in NYC

Whether you have an underbite, overbite, or gaps between your teeth, seeking orthodontic treatment is in your best interest for various reasons. Not only do crooked teeth often hold you back from smiling in confidence at job interviews and in social situations, but they also create health issues if ignored for too long. It’s no secret that straighter teeth are easier to brush and floss because bacteria have fewer places to hide in your mouth. Not correcting crowding or alignment issues can cause uneven wear on your teeth, a higher risk for tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease, and even difficulties speaking or chewing properly. For DentAlign NYC patients desiring orthodontic treatment, we have many options available, including Invisalign® clear braces and traditional metal braces. If you’re unsure which type of orthodontic treatment is best for you, read on to compare and contrast our two most popular options.

How Invisalign® Technology Works to Give You a New Smile

Invisalign® works similarly to traditional braces in that both methods gradually straighten your teeth over time. How much time is dependent upon your specific orthodontic goals and the severity of your condition. The primary differences between the two lies in their fabrication, fit, and function. Invisalign® uses 3D technology to create clear plastic teeth aligners that may be worn comfortably and removed easily by the patient when eating, brushing, or flossing. Traditional braces use metal wires and brackets to shift your teeth and are not removable by anyone other than your orthodontist. Both will require follow-up visits throughout the course of treatment. Your metal braces will require adjustments, while Invisalign® wearers will need to come in to receive the next in their series of aligners. For some patients, the idea of having to remember to remove their Invisalign® aligners seems daunting. However, it’s so easy a child could do it!

The Benefits of Invisible Braces for Teeth Straightening

While traditional braces have been around longer than Invisalign® invisible braces, that doesn’t mean they’ve worked out all the kinks with them yet. Here are a few of the benefits of choosing invisible braces for teeth straightening that you should consider when making your decision:

CONFIDENCE

Although today’s metal braces can be created to more closely match your natural tooth enamel, they’re still more visible than Invisalign® clear aligners. For many patients, smiling in confidence is simpler when you know others won’t be able to tell you’re wearing braces.

CONVENIENCE

Invisalign® braces are removable, making them easier to clean than traditional braces. You don’t have to avoid certain foods for fear of getting debris stuck in your metal wires and brackets, nor do you have to worry about handling any clunky headgear. However, you do need to remove them when eating or drinking anything other than water.

COMFORT

Metal braces have wires and brackets that sometimes cause irritation and sores. Invisalign® aligners are so smooth and comfortable, you can hardly tell you’re wearing them. Metal braces are also not ideal for those who play contact sports.

Invisalign Vs Traditional Braces

Invisalign® Teeth Aligners Are Customized for Every Patient

Both Invisalign® and traditional braces are effective ways to straighten your teeth and improve your smile. However, many DentAlign NYC patients prefer to rely on Invisalign® technology because it’s customized for every patient. Thanks to the 3D technology used to create them, Invisalign® teeth aligners are made to fit your mouth for the most precise teeth straightening results possible. When comparing treatment costs, many patients would be surprised to learn that metal braces can be just as expensive as Invisalign® in some cases. If you’re concerned about the costs of receiving customized Invisalign® teeth aligners, you can take comfort in the fact that we accept all major PPO insurance plans and have financing options available as well. Be sure to call your insurance company to discover if Invisalign® is covered under your policy!

What Happens During an Initial Consultation for Invisalign®?

During your initial consultation, we’ll determine if you’re a good candidate for Invisalign® by examining your teeth and gums and discussing your overall goals for treatment. While Invisalign® provides desirable results for many of our patients, it isn’t recommended for everyone. Once we’ve determined that you’re ready to begin orthodontic treatment using Invisalign®, we’ll conduct a 3D scan of your teeth and take some intraoral photographs to create your customized teeth aligners. Once your treatment plan has been approved and we’ve received your aligners, we’ll follow up with you about every 2-8 weeks for new aligners and to evaluate your progress.
