Fall Into a Healthier Smile: Preventive Tips for a New Season

Fall Into a Healthier Smile: Preventive Tips for a New Season

Nearly everyone experiences a dental problem during their lifetime, as tooth decay affects 90% of adults and gum disease impacts nearly 50% of adults ages 45-64. Fortunately, we have some simple tips that can help you fall into a healthier smile and reduce the risk of common oral health concerns.

The change of season can be a good time to make some changes in your oral care habits for a healthy smile. See Kenn Kakosian, DDS, PhD, and the general dentistry specialists at DentAlign NYC in Midtown East, Manhattan, New York, for regular teeth cleanings and superior preventive dental care.

Prevention tips for a healthy smile

Consider the following tips to achieve or maintain a healthier smile this fall season and beyond:

1. Watch what you eat

Your diet can significantly impact your oral health. Reduce or eliminate sugar-sweetened drinks like soda, lemonade, and sweet tea. Eat sweets and other desserts in moderation, and brush your teeth after eating these foods. Choose plenty of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds, along with calcium-rich foods.

2. Guard your teeth

Whether you wear a mouthguard during sports to protect your mouth or a nightguard to protect your teeth from grinding, this preventive measure is a key component of maintaining healthy teeth and a gorgeous smile. It can also save you money in dental costs by reducing injuries and wear and tear on your teeth.

3. Chew sugarless gum

Chewing sugarless gum diminishes the risk of cavities by boosting saliva volume and flow, according to the American Dental Association (ADA). If you’re  on the go and unable to brush your teeth after eating, chew gum instead. Look for a sugarless gum containing the ADA seal of acceptance.

4. Ask your dentist about sealants and fluoride

Sealants applied to your molars help prevent a buildup of bacteria, tartar, plaque, and food particles, while fluoride treatment significantly lessens your risk of tooth decay. Ask Dr. Kakosian if you’re a candidate for these preventive dental services.

5. Use fluoride toothpaste

Researchers say that using toothpaste containing fluoride reduces the risk of cavities. Aim to brush your teeth at least twice daily — better yet, after all meals — using fluoride toothpaste. Don’t forget to brush the roof of your mouth and tongue to minimize the risk of bacteria, plaque, tartar, gum disease, and decay.

6. Set flossing goals

Floss at least once daily to remove particles of food and plaque between teeth. Don’t skip flossing, as doing so can contribute to dental problems over time.

7. Use an antibacterial mouthwash

Antibacterial mouthwash helps keep harmful bacteria in your mouth at bay. It also rinses away food particles, eliminates debris, and reduces plaque buildup. Reduce your risk of dry mouth by choosing a mouthwash that’s alcohol-free.

8. Whiten and straighten your teeth

Ready to brighten and straighten your pearly whites this fall to perfect the look of your smile? Consider teeth whitening and Invisalign® treatment at DentAlign to enhance your smile’s appearance. Straighter teeth also make teeth cleaning easier, which reduces the risk of tooth decay.

9. Avoid skipping dental visits

Routine dental appointments help detect oral health problems before they become severe. See the DentAlign experts every six months for routine teeth cleanings and dental exams. You might need digital X-rays yearly. Regular dental visits help reduce the risk of costly or painful complications linked to decay, infections, or gum disease

10. Don’t smoke

Smoking negatively affects your overall oral health, as it’s the leading cause of gum disease and may contribute to oral cancer. Smoking also stains your teeth. See a medical professional if you need help quitting smoking.
