Visit Dr. Kenn Kakosian, DDS, at DentAlign NYC Today
If you’re less than confident about the appearance of your smile, DentAlign NYC can help. Dr. Kenn Kakosian, DDS, is a cosmetic gum reshaping specialist in New York City. Cosmetic gum reshaping is part of our dental services related to smile makeovers. During your initial consultation, we’ll examine your teeth and gums thoroughly, paying attention to the symmetry of your smile. If the line where your teeth meet your gums is disproportionate, it can create what is commonly referred to as a “gummy smile.” Every patient’s gum line is different. Some patients may have a high gum line, while others may have a low gum line. However, thanks to the marvels of modern dentistry, you can get the smile you’ve always wanted with gum contouring. What Is Gum Reshaping? Is It Cosmetic or Medically Necessary?
Gum reshaping, or gum contouring, is a procedure involving the re-sculpt of your gum line. While this is typically done for cosmetic reasons, there are some instances in which a dentist may recommend this procedure for your oral health. If you have severe periodontal disease, we may suggest gum contouring as part of your treatment options to repair and regrow damaged gum tissue or to save an impacted tooth. Gum reshaping usually involves removing excess gum tissue from around your teeth for gum reduction or restoring gum tissue for patients already experiencing significant gum recession. Gum contouring after braces may be recommended to reshape your gum line and create a more symmetrical smile after receiving orthodontic treatment. Occasionally, gum reshaping may be suggested before restorative options, such as porcelain veneers or dental crowns, to produce superior results.
What Should I Expect During a Gum Reshaping Procedure?
Gum reshaping is an outpatient procedure, typically done during one visit with your periodontist or dentist. You shouldn’t feel a thing during the procedure, thanks to the local anesthesia used to numb your gums. During this laser gum treatment, Dr. Kakosian will use a soft tissue laser to reshape your gum line. The amount of time needed for laser gum surgery will vary depending on the extent of gum contouring involved, but the average procedure takes one to two hours. Please plan accordingly.
Is Gum Contouring Painful? How Long Is Recovery After?
Although local anesthesia keeps you from feeling pain during the procedure, you may experience minor discomfort, tenderness, swelling, and pain afterward. Gum contouring pain should subside with time and over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or Tylenol. You’ll need to amend your diet for the first few days, sticking to soft foods such as soup, applesauce, Jell-O, or yogurt. We may also suggest applying an ice pack to your mouth for a couple of days to reduce the swelling. While gum contouring healing time will vary according to how extensive your procedure was, we generally say to expect downtime and recovery to take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. We’ll schedule a follow-up appointment to see how well you’re recovering and to ensure there aren’t any signs of infection.
